Article Abstract:

The cost of owning and operating a motor vehicle in Great Britain is illustrated from 1933 through 1983. Excepting gasoline, cost components are smaller in real terms in 1983 than they were in 1933. Depreciation in overall costs declined but the figures are deceptive; they do not recognize inflation. Trade in price and new car costs are increased by inflation, which reduce the depreciation allowance. Road taxes fell considerably by 1983, as have insurance costs. Technology is responsible for lowering repairs and services costs.
