Multiskilling, technical change and the Japanese firm

Article Abstract:

Workers in a business firm are hostile to technical changes because such changes pose a threat to their continued employment. In such an environment, a singly-skilled worker will not reveal any labor-saving ideas. If workers are trained to be multiskilled, however, support of technical innovations is more likely to occur. Such a scenario is investigated via a model of a static labor market that features several Japanese employment practices.

Japanese cars in top gear

Article Abstract:

The Japanese share of the world's car market should make a strong recovery in 1997. This acceleration will be due to a weakened yen, rising local production in many Asian markets, and competitive exports. Growth in this sector should also entail increased production in western Europe and emerging Pacific Rim markets.
