New patent regulations

Article Abstract:

The United Arab Emirate's (UAE) 1992 law regulating industrial property and industrial drawings and models patents will pertain mainly to know-how and other types of technology transfer contracts. Both temporary and permanent patent protection can be granted under the law as long as applicants can establish appropriate jurisdictional contacts with the UAE. The law details the Industrial Property Administration's patent application and award process, and specifically delineates which know-how and technology licensing agreements qualify for protection.

Draft federal trademark law

Article Abstract:

The United Arab Emirates passed draft federal trademark legislation on April 20, 1992, the final member of the Gulf Cooperation Council to do so. When approved, the law will define trademarks, provide for registration, licensing and transfer of ownership. The UAE was placed on a watch list by the US under the Super 301 act because of their lack of protection for intellectual property rights.
