Omani decree approves accession to Paris and Berne Conventions

Article Abstract:

Oman's bid to enter the Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property and the Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works has been finally approved with the passage of Sultani Decree 63 of 1998. The law specifically provides the Oman government authority to exercise right of reservation in the event of international disputes. Although the new legislation would be partially ineffective in expediting the protection of foreign trademarks in Oman, experts believe it would boost the country's membership bid to the World Trade Organization.

Oman's new arbitration law opens up new perspectives

Article Abstract:

Oman implements on July 1, 1997 a comprehensive arbitration law called Civil and Commercial Disputes (the Arbitration Law or AL). The law promises to enhance commercial arbitration in Oman as it contains several of its past local arbitration laws. It also embodies a comprehensive arbitration framework as it tries to introduce new aspects of arbitration that have never been touched in local commercial sector and in courts. One aspect contained in the new law is the provision of procedural autonomy to parties involved in arbitration proceedings.
