Oman's stock market: performance raising concerns, officials move to develop exchange institutionally

Article Abstract:

Trade and banking officials have implemented a number of new Muscat Securities Market (MSM) policies in Oman to uplift the market's bad performance. MSM fell 20% in 1998 after it increased in 1997. The MSM was created to encourage private development through public shareholding in large firms. MSM is imposing stricter trading policies to control speculation and public investment. Companies have to submit quarterly statements complying to international accounting standards. The government is also promoting foreign investments into the country.

Article Abstract:

The Egyptian stock market prepares for greater business activity as it is expected to grow by 30 percent annually. The expected growth is being attributed to several factors, such as Egyptian pound deposits' low interest rates and privatization reforms initiated by the government. The number of investors engaged in the Cairo stock exchange and its network linked satelite in Alexandria grew from 200,000 in 1995 to 1.1 million in 1997.
