On Hold for a Year

Article Abstract:

The administration appears reluctant to tackle the budget deficit with an oncoming election year and continuing economic recovery. Martin Feldstein, chairman of the president's council of economic advisers, opposes this policy and warns that the effects of the large deficit could be disastrous in the long run. Various tax increase proposals and the effects of a tax increase are examined. Feldstein, who supports a tax increase, predicts that investment will suffer greatly from the ongoing deficit.
