East Germany, West Germany, and their mezzogiorno problem: a parable for European economic integration

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to examine the failure of German economic integration. Results show that full convergence for the two Germanies will take 30-40 years in the absence of a Mezzogiorno problem. Other factors which must be considered for the integration process include the impact of productivity lags on fiscal transfers and deficits, the effect of monetary policy and interest rate plans on inflation and monetary contractions and recession.
