Black-White earnings differentials: privatization versus deregulation

Article Abstract:

Deregulation and privatization of the transportation industry has increased competition and reduced wage discrimination against African American drivers. This is especially true for public transit drivers, where privatization reduced all wages, but leveled wages of whites and blacks. The high start up costs in trucking have blocked entry for some blacks.

Market structure and racial earnings: evidence from job-changers

Article Abstract:

The hypothesis that non-competitive industries could practice discriminatory wage policies more easily than competitive industries is debunked by this study. This study shows that because non-competitive industries are more unionized, wages are standardized and do not vary much between races.

A framework is proposed for an open-economy monetary system that uses interest rates to control inflation and includes a floating monetary exchange rate.
