Organizational form and efficiency: evidence from Indian sugar manufacturing

Article Abstract:

The Indian sugar processing industry is examined to evaluate the relationship between ownership and firm efficiency differences. Sugar cooperatives exhibited similar or greater levels of efficiency compared to their counterparts, which indicates advantages that are generated by the organizational form. Thus, organizational structures that include technical and coordination economies of vertical integration are considered optimal.

Impact of central planning on production efficiency: the case of the cotton yarn industry in China

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to determine the effects of central economic planning on production efficiency. The study focuses on the case of China's cotton yarn industry and considers data for the period from 1922-1936. Results show that central planning generated a 21% reduction in total factor productivity for the studied case. In addition, trading absence from 1949 to 1978 led to major output drops as cotton crops failed.

Technical change in Chinese state industry: a new approach

Article Abstract:

An analysis of the technological growth in the centrally planned economy of China for the period 1952-1988 results in favorable findings. The methodology used differs from the usual approach as it precludes the existence of perfect competition and eliminates the need to index technological levels with the time factor. Furthermore, the method does not resort to presuppositions and cost function estimation.
