Overtime, effort, and the propagation of business cycle shocks

Article Abstract:

A real business cycle model which differentiates between straight time and overtime is formulated and estimated, as it is compared to a labor hoarding model. The overtime model has the state of technology as its only latent variable, while the labor model has effort as its second latent variable. In general, both models are observed as unable to properly adjust their labor allocations along the margins of effort, time and overtime.
