Peripherality in economic geography and modern growth theory: evidence from Ireland's adjustment to free trade

Article Abstract:

The predictions offered in recent work on absolute convergence were compared with data taken from a period when Ireland was adjusting to rapid infrastructural development and freer trade. An analysis of models of economic geography and endogenous growth theory showed that the integration of a small economy into a larger and more high-developed trading entity may well cause divergence. In addition, an analysis of Ireland's experience with free trade does not support the hypotheses presented in the endogenous growth literature.
