Physician payments and infant mortality: evidence from Medicaid fee policy

Article Abstract:

The US ranked 21st among industrialized countries in terms of infant mortality rate with nine deaths per 1,000 births. Congress addressed the situation by increasing eligibility for women under Medicaid coverage by 140% between 1979 and 1990. However, an inadequate supply of physicians has hampered the program. Increased Medicaid fees has been considered as a cost-effective option to eligibility coverage for infant mortality reduction.
