Price variability and price dispersion in a stable monetary environment: evidence from German retail markets

Article Abstract:

The dynamics of inflation and price variation is examined using data for consumption goods in Germany during 1995. A very positive correlation between the rates of price change and price dispersion at the level of individual products and product groups is found.

The effect of German retail industry's market power on price rigidity and flexibility in the German retail market is analyzed. Data from weekly retail scanner prices from 207 retail outlets during the January 2000 to December 2001 timeframe is used.
