Productive efficiency during transition: evidence from Bulgarian panel data

Article Abstract:

Extensive panel data from Bulgarian industrial companies, which was used to analyze productive efficiency during early transition, indicate that factors such as exports magnitude and unionization do not influence performance. On the average, firm efficiency is low, standing between 0.603 and 0.720. Efficiency is negatively affected by external adjustment during transition. However, there is a positive performance result when private ownership with a bigger market share exists. This is also true when there are established compensation systems that offer profit-sharing and incentive schemes.

Ownership structure and determinants of technical efficiency: an application of data envelopment analysis to Chinese enterprises (1986-1990)

Article Abstract:

Comparatively large township-village enterprises (TVEs) outperformed state-owned enterprises (SOEs) in terms of technical efficiency during the 1986-1990 period. Furthermore, while urban collective-owned enterprises (COEs) appeared to be less efficient than TVEs, their performance was better than that of SOEs. The study through which these conclusions have been made did not, however, account for product quality disparities and input-output pricing inherent in the modes of ownership. Nevertheless, there was positive correlation between technical efficiency and production magnitude.
