Spanish mobile phone operators Airtel and Telefonica Moviles have the power to increase or decrease sales by phone manufacturers, depending on the special offer they decide to launch periodically. In 1997, for example, Alcatel (540,000 phones sold) was able to complete with Ericsson (493,000), Nokia (585,000) and Motorola (590,000) with only one model, the One Touch Easy. The success was due to the pre-paid packs launched by the Spanish operators, which now account for over one third of mobile phone subscription. Ericsson has now launched with the Airtel Ahorro Tiempo Libre plan, its GA 628 model and Motorola has launched its d520 model through Telefonica and the Tic Tac through Airtel. Both Spanish operators offer significant subsidies to manufacturers, which can be as much as Pta 20,000 per terminal. Although most of the current phones operating on the pre-paid system are low range models, all segments, even the StarTAC, are likely to get on board. This strategy is said to be in mind for Retevision Movil.

El ave del AVE

Over a two year period, Spanish rail operator Renfe used a simple, but anecdotal stimulus for punctuality in its AVE high speed rail service. The 'ave del AVE' (bird of the AVE) was a little colourful toy duck which would have to be carried around in the brief cases of engineers who were not able to keep the Ave on schedule. The AVE also has other systems it relies on such as the on-board computer system and STT (Transport Teleoperations System). Yet another tool proving to be successful for good business has been the self-training programme. Train engineers and supervisors fill out a test type survey which asks questions ranging from technical matters to normal service for clients. All of the AVE personnel read through questions and answers through an intranet system. In the first half of 1998 the Ave posted a profit of Pta 1,520mn and a turnover of Pta 22,000mn. The AVE has an 82% share of the Madrid-Sevilla route, where it competes with Iberia airline for business.

SPAIN: MOTOROLA AIMS FOR MARKET SHARE

The new president of the Spanish unit of Motorola, Pablo Calvo, has said that the target for 1999 is to reach turnover of Pta 69,000mn, 15% up on a year earlier but still way down on the 1996 peak of Pta 90,000mn. In the mobile telecoms area, which accounts for 50% of turnover in Spain, Motorola says its market share reached 29% in May 1999, 15 points up on March 1998. Pablo Calvo believes that a return to its peak share of 40% is not possible because of the different situation in the market and it is currently aiming for 33%.
