Regional Productivity Growth in U.S. Manufacturing: 1951-78

Article Abstract:

A source of growth framework is used to examine the slowdown in productivity growth and the economic decline of older regions in the United States. Regional variations in output growth resulted in variations in the rates of growth of capital and labor. Labor productivity grew at the same rate in both the Sun Belt and the Snow Belt.

Does Rising Productivity Explain Seniority Rules for Layoffs?

Article Abstract:

The contribution of seniority rules to higher productivity is challenged in an implicit contract model. The most senior workers should be laid-off first. The junior worker's training will be interrupted and prolonged by layoffs. The reserve of trained employees will be available for recall.

Input Measurement and Productivity Growth in Japanese and U.S. Manufacturing

Article Abstract:

Productivity growth is analyzed for Japan and the United States. Japanese growth has resulted from capital stock growth and increased labor input per man. A greater amount of materials available to the Japanese worker is important in his increased productivity.
