Regional trade blocs and the GATT

Article Abstract:

Non-economic and economic relationships exist between contemporary or future trade blocs and a broad multilateral systems such as the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT). The relationships includes political links such as demilitarization and weapons control as well as environmental and monetary policies. Tensions could arise from the establishment of separate trading blocs in the Pacific region, Western Hemisphere and Europe. However, a multilateral system such as GATT could be better for world trading. Policies, such as the most-favoured-nation clause, surveyed, together with the GATT experiences and rules, the changing world and the reconciliation of competing goals.

The World Trade Organization: watershed innovation or cautious small step forward?

Article Abstract:

The World Trade Organization is both a gradual step towards a more effective GATT and a significant stride towards a definitive and robust international economic decisionmaking. The entity was established in Jan. 1995 with its own charter. Its dispute resolution provisions are important for orderly economic relations. Their effective implementation resides on their ability to withstand the influence of stronger nations.

Mercosur - Another Failed Move Towards Regional Integration

Article Abstract:

Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay in their Treaty of Assuncion (1991) proclaimed the formation of the Mercado Comun del Sur followed by their Protocolo de Ouro Preto to establish trade liberalisation and to form a common market. Mercosur, as this treaty came to be known, has not made any headway but has stagnated in its implementation because of the member nations' reluctance in sharing sovereignty.
