SPAIN: ANY PLANS FOR WAL-MART?

Article Abstract:

With US retail giant Wal-Mart having set its eye on the European market, experts are trying to analyse what types of groups the chain could be looking to acquire. According to Management Horizons in Spain, Wal-Mart would be looking to acquire medium sized establishments such as Mercadona, Caprabo or Superdiplo. Wal-Mart's situation with its suppliers is reportedly not as tense as the one between French hyper-market chains such as Alcampo, Continente or Pryca. The latter, together with Spanish hypermarkets Eroski and Hipercor might be forced into a position to have to band together in order to compete with the likes of Wal-Mart should it decide to enter the Spanish market. The hypermarkets offer around 20,000 different products in Spain, while Wal-Mart would offer up to 90,000, with an efficiency based on ERC.
