SPAIN: FRANCHISING GOES ON-LINE

Article Abstract:

In order to gain clients loyalty, improve prices in some cases, as well as to gain business hours operating 24 hours per day, franchising groups in Spain are starting to develop e-commerce strategies. In that sense, luxury clothing brand Adolfo Dominguez projects to open two virtual shops in April 2000 in order to sell respectively the brands 'Linea U' and 'Adolfo Dominguez', as well as writing materials and business presents. Deliveries will be implemented by Seur. Retail clothing chain Mango, through an agreement with courier DHL, will operate on-line in EU countries from September 2000, delivering orders in four days. While fast food chain Telepizza plans to start selling pizzas and other products in Internet from July 2000, using its 12,000 motorcycle deliverers; US chain McDonald's is still developing its strategy. Pizza Hut is testing Internet branches in Kansas, but no plans are reported for Spain at present. The franchised on-line data-base franchised chain Infotrans (franchisees look for companies to add in the data base) operates in Internet. Translation agency Tradunet distributes its on-line clients according to geographical distribution of its franchisees. Article Abstract:

Spanish supermarket chain Dialco, which is based in Seville, is reportedly planning to invest Pta 900mn in 1998 to open nine new establishments. The company is present in six of the eight provinces in the region of Andalucia. According to the company's managing director, plans could include agreements with suppliers, setting up a distribution platform or a cross-share holding with other companies.
