SPAIN: COCA-COLA ESPANA'S BOTTLING FIRMS

In 1999, Coca Cola's Espana seven bottling companies produced 2,3000mm litres of soft drinks marketed by Coca Cola (+8.6% on 1998). Begano, which bottles Coca Cola's drinks for the region of Galicia, registered Pta 12,947mn sales and Pta 1,333mn net profits. Production amounted to 109mn litres. In 1998, Casbega, which operates in the regions of Madrid, Castilla-Leon and Castilla-La Mancha, totalled Pta 76,712mn sales and Pta 4,600mn net profits. Its production amounted to 481mn litres. Rendelsur registered Pta 59,396mn sales and Pta 1,387mn net profits in 1998; while production amounted to 484mn litres. It operates in Extremadura and Andalucia. In 1998, Colebega registered Pta 46,143mn sales and Pta 1,201mn net profits. Production amounted to 336mn litres. It operates in Valencia and Murcia. In 1996, Norbega, which is active in Basque Country, Cantabria, Navarra y La Rioja, totalled Pta 15,780mn sales and Pta 1,333mn net profits. Production amounted to 113mn litres. In 1999, Asturbega registered Pta 7,446mn sales and Pta 441mn net profits. Production amounted to 55mn litres. It operates in Leon and Asturias. Colebega, in 1998, totalled Pta 89,584mn sales and Pta 6,208mn net profits. Production amounted to 652mn. It is active in Catalonia, Balearic Isles, Aragon and Canary Islands.

Article Abstract:

Spanish branch of Coca Cola, Coca Cola Espana, will base its expansion plans on a strong local marketing campaign. In this sense, in 1999, Coca Cola Espana allocated Pta 6,391mn to advertising (+19.3% on 1998). Additionally, it will implement a decentralisation strategy respecting to US parent company, adapting general plans to the Spanish market. On the other hand, Coca Cola Espana is considering to break into mineral water market, since potential sales are clearly high. Concerning distribution channels, Coca Cola is analysing other ways, as business and leisure centres. According to analysts, Coca Cola Espana, jointly with its subsidiary bottling firms, register L 700,000mn sales (Coca Cola's main competitor, Pepsi, totalled Pta 110,000mn sales in 1999). In 2001, the group expects to increase turnover by 13%. In 1999, Coca Cola controlled a 58.7% market share of Spanish carbonated soft drinks (on 57% in 1998); while Pepsi controlled a 14% quota.
