Shocks and adjustment by firms in transition: a comparative study

Article Abstract:

The findings of a case study project involving 43 firms in Czechoslovakia, Hungary and Poland subjected to systemic changes in 1990-1992 are summarized. Evidence has been gathered that a number of firms have undergone restructuring before privatization. However, low levels of viability and weak management have inhibited restructuring. The need for a tangible privatization program for a successful transition is emphasized in the cases. Long-term planning form an intricate part of privatization despite the development of short-term plans in most of the firms.

The eastern German labor market in transition: gross flow estimates from panel data

Article Abstract:

The eastern German labor market's characteristics during the transition from communism to capitalism was studied via a survey of citizens between Nov. 1990 and Nov. 1991. The results verified expectations of a labor supply contraction prior to stabilization and predictions of a service-dominated economy. The study used Markovian flow analysis, steady-state forecasts and multinomial logistic estimates.
