Sub-Saharan African own commitments in the Uruguay Round - myth of reality?

Article Abstract:

Own policy commitments made by or required of Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) in the Uruguay Round (UR) have an empirical nature. This is based on an analysis of actual commitment schedules submitted by SSA nations in the UR and the assumption that developing countries benefit from liberal trade policies. The UR is not expected to burden SSA with several new 'obligations.' Most SSA nations have not made significant liberalization commitments on border protection in agriculture, industry or services. In addition, the agreements offer substantial flexibility in the adoption of the obligations for developing nations.

Towards an evaluation of regional integration in Latin America in the 1990s

Article Abstract:

Over 15 regional integration initiatives have been launched in Latin America in the 1990s. These agreements include the 1990 Andean Pact, the 1991 Central American Common Market, the 1991 Mercosur, the 1993 NAFTA and the 1994 G3. The dramatic rise in interest in economic integration has been accompanied by an equally remarkable increase in the region's overall trade, with total imports rising 127% between 1990 and 1996 and exports increasing 73% in the same period. More significant, intra-regional trade has grown rapidly, accounting fo 18% of all Latin American exports.
