Trade liberalisation and the environment: the case of the Uruguay Round

Article Abstract:

Most developing and transition regions will encounter a growth in emissions of all five pollutants namely nitrogen oxide, sulphur dioxide, carbon monoxide, suspended particulate matter and carbon dioxide as a result of the Uruguay Round. The trade negotiations will also likely to result in the growth of heavy industrial businesses and the textile sector in all developing countries, which would eventually lead to a greater increase in emissions of all four local air pollutants. In developed regions, emissions of 3 local air pollutants are likely to drop while nitrogen dioxide and carbon dioxide emissions will generally increase.

The effects of the Uruguay Round Tariff Reductions on the forest product trade: a partial equilibrium analysis

Article Abstract:

The impact of the Uruguay Round of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade on tariff reductions for forest products in major import markets was examined through a partial equilibrium approach. Analysis of trade data indicate that while the overall increases in trade are significant, the amount of increases in the trade of international forest products were comparatively small. One reason for this is that the tariff rates before the Uruguay Rounds were already at very low levels. It is suggested that additional cuts in forest products tariffs will not have a trade diversion effect.

Article Abstract:

The Uruguay Round Agriculture Agreement (AA) specifies reductions in agricultural support and protection. It has well-delineated provisions on domestic support, market access and export subsidies. While the European Union and the US are unlikely to be affected by AA provisions, developing countries are likely to suffer from the expected increases in world market prices.
