Suncare preparation sales have seen substantial value growth in recent years as many consumers take heed of sun safety messages. Both men and women have increased usage, although there has been a sharper increased in male users. The preferred application method is lotions and milks and manufacturers can incorporate higher SPFs in lotions now. Boots represents 48% of all suncare preparation product sales. Continued growth is expected, and protection and after sun are expected to outperform the self-tanning sector.

The U.K. market for decongestants and cold remedies is expected to reach 102 million pounds sterling in 1996, against 97 million pounds sterling in 1995. The only growth in this mature market is through the launch of sub-categories, new product formats and stronger formulations. The largest sector is cold remedies, worth 58.2 million pounds sterling in 1995. It is forecast that the market will reach 142.6 million pounds sterling by 2000, at current prices.
