The Drug Industry Moves from Discovery to Design
Article Abstract:
New techniques are being used by drug company researchers to develop useful drugs. Historically, drugs were developed following the discovery of active compounds in natural substances. Some examples of this are aspirin and digitalis. A German medical student, Paul Erlich, discovered that chemical dyes of different types had different effects on the human tissues, which in turn led to the development of specific compounds to fight certain diseases. Many advances were made expanding and refining this general procedure. Drug designers now regard cell receptors as the key to drug research. With receptors in mind, designers may develop drugs which either stimulate a certain physiological response or inhibit responses. In order to carry on research, receptors must be studied intensely. There are several means of examining their structure. After a designer creates a drug, using models and computer simulations, a chemist can put together the compound.

SABIC has also started its expansion projects that include the construction of plants for the production of ethylene glycol, ammonia, urea and ethylene.
