The European policy of Francois Mitterrand

Article Abstract:

Francois Mitterrand took some time to reveal his deep-rooted personal commitment to European integration in order to maximize his chances of becoming president of France. Although this commitment can be detected by analysing his statements and actions throughout his political career, Mitterrand's flexible attitude to European policy and readiness to adapt to remain leader of the French Socialist Party resulted in his being seen as a bad European. However, on becoming president of France in 1981, Mitterrand took personal control of European policy and developed it in line with his thinking.

The public policy role of the European Investment Bank within the EU

Article Abstract:

The European Investment Bank (EIB) was established to bring competition and efficiency to the less efficient European banking markets. Its unprecedented expansion despite the growing sophistication of private financial markets has led to the idea that it does not only provide project financing but also plays a public policy role. Moves to get the EIB involved in equity investment and loan guarantees support this idea. The potential negative consequences of a public policy role for the EIB are discussed.

European business in Japan: a policy crossroads?

Article Abstract:

European corporations have had minimal market impact in Japan. On the other hand, Japanese firms have been very active in European markets. This contrast is observed in the response of both Americans and Europeans to the EC-Japan market imbalance. US plans for multilateralizing foreign pressure in response to trade barriers have not been considered favorably. In addition, the US has been criticized for its approach toward Japanese market barriers against foreign firms.
