The economic performance of African-American-owned banks: the role of loan loss provisions

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to analyze a framework characterizing the channel for exogenous credit risks to affect the quality of the loan portfolio. The study also examined whether the provision of loan losses in minority banks is influenced by factors indigenous to ethnic and racial communities. Results indicated that differences in the economic performance between nonminority banks and African-American banks correlate with Afro-American banks' assessment of risk in their community.

Tolerance of arrearages: how IMF loan policy can effect debt reduction

Article Abstract:

A model of bargaining under asymmetric information is used to analyze how debtor-creditor bargaining relations are affected by the policy of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The analysis indicates that the least expensive way to reduce debt is to lend in arrears, which corresponds with the policy of the IMF. Even an announcement of the intent to lend in arrears is beneficial. A lack of action is more beneficial to debtors than contingent lending.
