The WTO trade policy review of India, 1998

Article Abstract:

The World Trade Organization's Trade Policy Review of India examines the reforms made in opening up India's economy to competition and to lower the tariffs and non-tariff barriers imposed on the country's imports. The specific issues discussed are the economy's recent performance in relation to trade and foreign investment, the institutional structure within which trade and investment policies are developed and executed, trade policy measures already implemented and an examination of trade policies by sector. It is concluded that India's domestic commercial and trade policies are still greatly distorted and that policy reforms should proceed in all sectors.

Tariffication in the Uruguay Round: how much liberalisation?

Article Abstract:

The Uruguay Round agreement on the conversion of agricultural trade barriers into tariffs cannot reverse protectionism and eliminate trade distortions unless tariff levels are reduced. The provision for very high levels of bound tariffs will hinder developing countries from gaining access to the markets of developed countries. The Round also ignored grave distortions in developing countries such as import subsidies and import taxes.
