The case for randomized field trials in economic and policy research

Article Abstract:

Social experimentation has been around for more than 25 years. Earlier field trials for social policy were more lavish and consumed greater resources. Recent experiments have been less ambitious and have had a narrower focus. However, findings of these newer experiments have had a larger impact on actual policy decisions. The rationale for field experimentation in economics is examined and some of the main criticisms against experiments in recent years are considered.

Business cycles in international historical perspective

Article Abstract:

Research on business cycles indicates that money plays an important role, though the way that money affects the woder economy is unclear. Institutions and the history of individual countries also have an effect on recessions and the stickiness of wages and prices. Models of business cycles should take the international contex into account, especially in a context of globalization. Policymakers face also constraints, which can vary over time.
