The economics of the Middle East peace process: are there prospects for trade and growth?

Article Abstract:

The issue of whether the peace process will promote trade among countries in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) and between these nations and Europe is examined. The study also investigates whether intra-MENA trade is influenced by variables determining comparable costs, such as economies of scale, technical differences and relative factor endowments. Findings suggest that the impact of political unrest in the region on trade and economic growth may have been overestimated, and that welfare gains may arise from the peace process only if it eliminates domestic distortions in MENA economies.

The distribution of foreign direct investment in China

Article Abstract:

The distribution of foreign direct investment (FDI) in China shows regional disparity despite efforts of Chinese authorities to address the problem. Analysis shows that Chinese coastal areas accounted for 90% of foreign direct investment in China since 1989 as compared to investments received by inland provinces, which are less developed. China's implementation of other measures, such as FDI policy regime transparency and reduction of government bureaucracy, is highly needed in order to address the problem of regional disparity effectively.
