The equilibrium exchange rate of the Chinese Renminbi

Article Abstract:

Evaluation of Chinese monetary policy between 1978 and 1994 reveals that exchange rates were generally overvalued but exchange rates remained closer to estimated shadow price of foreign exchange rates (SPFE) between 1990 and 1994. The study evaluates SPFE and purchasing power parity (PPP) for the whole sample period and finds that the renminbi has been significantly overvalued between 1978 and 1990 and that between 1990 and 1994, China relaxed its monetary policy to reflect actual exchange rates.

Export duty rebates and export performance: theory and China's experience

Article Abstract:

Statistics from China show that, for an economy affected by sector-specific unemployment, export tax rebates on imported foreign intermediates can boost its linked upstream and downstream industries, thus increasing exports. The export tax rebate, exchange rate volatility and foreign income were found to make a substantial contribution to China's exports in the long term.
