The first century of The Scandinavian Journal of Economics

Article Abstract:

The early writings of The Scandinavian Journal of Economics was dominated by David Davidson, Professor of Economics at Uppsala University, followed by some of Swedens' famous economists such as Cassel, Wicksell, Heckscher, Ohlin, Myrdal and Lindahl. The journal provides a vast and untapped source of knowledge of the ongoing scholarly debate, especially for the historian. In the coming twenty-first century, distribution channels, such as electronic networks and Internet publications, are expected to challenge the world of journal publishing.

The visible hand - Anders Berch and the University of Uppsala Chair in Economics

Article Abstract:

Disturbances in the political climate coinciding with the peak of the Enlightenment Movement in Continental Europe generated an impact on the minds of Sweden's intellectuals. Various economic publications flourished under such conditions. University chairs for the subject were first established in Germany in 1727 while Sweden had its first chair at the University of Uppsala in 1741. Anders Berch, Sweden's first economics teacher, followed an economic development program similar to its German counterpart.

Why are taxes so high in egalitarian societies?

Article Abstract:

The tax on labor income may increase welfare for all agents if the ratio of agent i's consumption in relation to agent j's consumption enters into the utility function. All agents will favor a labor income tax when pre-tax wage inequality is low. Therefore, societies with low pre-tax wage inequality tend to have high taxes.
