The global age: from sceptical south to a fearful north

Article Abstract:

The drive towards globalization faces challenges as developing and developed countries raise issues regarding the effectivity of global integration. Issues such as isolationism, intrusionism and eco-dumping allegations are affecting the immediate implementation of free trade. With regards to developed countries, the possibility of negatively affecting the high living standards of their countries as a result of declining wages and rising unemployment are being raised. Developed countries argue that these might result due to existence of unfair competition with developing countries in terms of cheaper labor costs, among other things.

Trade liberalization and 'fair trade' demands: addressing the environmental and labor standards issues

Article Abstract:

The social clause in the World Trade Organization among major Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development countries is rejected since it goes against the lawful diversity of labor standards across countries. The Clause is only a means for labor unions in rich countries to raise production costs for fear of competition for their jobs from poor countries. A multilateral consensus of a labor standard through the International Labor Organization is proposed.

Regionalism versus multilateralism

Article Abstract:

The rise of regionalism in the 1980s is analyzed using certain provisions in the GATT concerning customs unions and free trade areas. Regionalism, however, is not as efficient as its supporters profess. Weaker nations may have to submit to demands of stronger nations and the resulting concessions may eventually have a distorted effect on multilateral negotiations.
