The post-war Japanese economy and Schumpeter's corporatist principle

Article Abstract:

Post-war Japan is not a good example of Schumpeter's corporatist principles in action, because resource allocation is dealt with more by civil servants rather Schumpeter's view, which placed for emphasis on the private sector, and because group effort dominates ethics, rather than Schumpeter's emphasis on individualism. The Japanese brand of corporatism more closely resembles a kind of capitalism dominated by bureaucracy which Schumpeter described as being like an oxygen tent. The idea of corporatism was set out by Pius XI, and backed by Schumpeter in 1945, but, though he was the sole big league economist to back this idea, he still placed a strong emphasis on free enterprise.
