The rise of China: Prospects of regional trade policy

Article Abstract:

China engages in multilateral trade liberalization as a new member of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and along with its trading partners, it would benefit from increased regional liberalization. It is shown that Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) have small effects on Asia Pacific exports, but China's participation in regional agreements has large export potentials with ASEAN and South and East Asian countries.

Intra-industry trade by types: What can we learn from Portuguese data?

Article Abstract:

Research into intra-industry trade (IIT) received a fillip after the development of a model to empirically de-link horizontal IIT (HIIT) associated with a differentiation in characteristics from vertical IIT (VIIT) normally associated with a differentiation in quality. Using this method studies show positive evidence on IIT in the Portuguese case since year 1994 and exact explanatory factors are identified for each of the IITs and results tabulated.

Do currency barriers solve the border effect puzzle? Evidence from the CFA Franc Zone

Article Abstract:

A gravity model is used to investigate which currency barriers explain the impact of national borders on international trade in the two monetary unions of the CFA Franc Zone in West and Central Africa. It is indicated that these countries display large border effects and the currency barriers explain between 17 to 28 percent of the overall border effect.
