The skill and higher educational content of UK net exports

Article Abstract:

Labor skills, education, and wages, collectively referred to as "human capital," are critical to the content of a nation's exports and imports. A study using the Heckscher-Ohlin model of international trade showed that in 1984 the UK had far less manually skilled labor than its trading partners. This was reflected in the content of its international trade. The UK was shown to be fairly good at training professionals and managers but less effective in developing well-educated skilled labor.

Vacancy durations: search or selection?

Article Abstract:

A recent study on employment vacancy durations in The Netherlands in 1986-1987 confirms that the time jobs are open relates mostly to interviewing and evaluation. Finding a pool of applicants is relatively quick and happens early. The selection period increases as education and experience requirements rise. A formula for estimating both the attraction and selection phases of a vacancy period is put forth.

The relations between unemployment benefits, the reservation wage and search duration

Article Abstract:

A recent study showed that unemployment benefit amounts and the reservation wage are less important than the rate of job offers in ending an individual's job search. Living in a major city makes search times longer, while skilled workers and those with advanced degrees experience shorter search times.
