The weather factor and variability in China's grain supply

Article Abstract:

Variability in weather conditions yield quantifiable effects on the annual grain production of China. Growth in the country's grain output during the early 1970's and its subsequent slowdown in the mid-1980's have been traced to favorable and less advantageous weather conditions, respectively. These fluctuations have been measured using disaggregate country-level data culled from five Chinese production areas. Undoubtedly, future grain supply shocks in China can cause disturbances in the global market. The likelihood has been precipitated by China's open door economic policy.
