The welfare state as provider of accident insurance in the workplace: efficiency and distribution in equilibrium

Article Abstract:

The welfare state model of insurance involves state provision of accident insurance for all workers. This model is the basis for the workers' compensation insurance system in Scandinavian countries and is advocated because of the high probability of claims payment. However, it has been criticized for its potential generation of a moral hazard problem. Analysis of non-internalized insurance indicates that the latter fear is unfounded, since workers may actually exercise greater care at work. Therefore, welfare state insurance results in higher safety levels than expected.

Equity, efficiency and insurance: explaining the structure of miners' wage payments in Victorian County Durham

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to examine labor market conditions in County Durham. The study focuses on miners' wage payment systems and attempts to justify them based on economic rationale. Modern institutional economics are then applied for the case study. Results show that all rules on wage payments were followed with the exception of the County Average System (CAS). Violations to the CAS led some parties to nullify its agreement.

Union membership and wage bargaining when membership is not compulsory

Article Abstract:

A model described the simultaneous determination of labor union wages and membership based on data for manual workers from the 1990 Workplace Industrial Relations Survey. The model established excludable incentive goods as vital factors that catalyze membership into unions without coercive closed shop rules. The absence of closed shops gave unions problems with covered employees who take advantage of membership.
