Article Abstract:

The UK market for toys and games will increase in real terms only 1% per year to 2001 to 1,795 million pounds sterling from 1,703 million pounds sterling in 1997. Sales of dolls and action figures will remain strong. The market grew 7% in real terms to 1.67 billion pounds sterling in 1996 from 1992. Imports account for 80% of the UK market, with four foreign manufacturers accounting for 43% of the market in 1996. Toy manufacturers must compete with other leisure product suppliers, with children's leisure demands becoming increasingly sophisticated.

The UK games and toy market is forecast to increase from an estimated 1,680 million pounds sterling in 1999 to a projected 1,713 million pounds sterling by 2003. A rise in the number of older, financially secure parents has proved beneficial to the market, with children be bought more expensive toys and games. The 1999 toy market is expected to be boosted by toys and games associated with the film Star Wars, while the popularity of the Teletubbies increased the soft toy market to 115 million pounds sterling by 1998.
