Vietnam in ASEAN - economic reform, openness and transformation: an overview

Article Abstract:

Vietnam's entry into the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in July 1995 has reinforced its policy of openness and pressed it to take up economic reform and structural adjustment. Vietnam's membership of the ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA) is a key step towards formalizing its economic integration within Southeast Asia. By implementing the Common Effective Preferential Tariff, Vietnam can request special privileges from ASEAN/AFTA. Although foreign direct investment in economic growth transformation remains important, domestic mobilization of capital is increasing.

Economic reform and openness in Vietnam: micro-economic response and transformation

Article Abstract:

Vietnam's state-owned enterprises (SOEs) have adapted to macro-economic reform from 1989 to 1993, according to a survey studying the micro-economic responses to the market-oriented reforms. SOEs adjusted to the fundamental constraints of the market with changes in relative prices and signals, hardening of soft budget constraints, and increase in management autonomy. The reforms provided the private enterprises (PEs) a stable environment and expanding market opportunities. While SOEs have improved their profitability, PEs are finding it difficult to maintain profitability.

Enterprise reform and Vietnam's transformation to a market-oriented economy

Article Abstract:

Industries of Vietnam are in a phase of transition between planned and market-based that may lead to transformation of enterprises to market-oriented organization, incentives and institutions or adjustment of indeterminacy and medium-run enterprise under essentially unstable internal and external conditions. The study evaluates the enterprise reform in the current context of Vietnam's market-oriented transformations process.
