Welfare-improving health expenditure subsidies

Article Abstract:

A model with health expenditure-based insurance payouts was created to assess the effects of providing subsidies for out-of-pocket health expenses. Findings based on the model reveal that subsidizing coinsurance payments lead to reduced health expenditures and increased welfare if health insurance premiums are payable with pretax dollars. Equal subsidies are also shown to be close to ideal in the presence of deadweight loss. In its absence, the ideal subsidy to coinsurance is greater than that provided to premiums, however, equal subsidies to both will still remain welfare improving.

Growth: with or without scale effects?

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to analyze a framework for examining three classes of models that reintroduce the result that changes in policy can have affects on the long-run rate of growth. These models include the Romer/Grossman-Helpman/Aghion-Howitt model, the Jones/Kortum/Segerstrom model, and the Young/Peretto/Aghio-Hoitt/Dinopoulos-Thompson model. Results indicated that the models supported scale effects on the level of per capita income rather than its growth rate.

On the importance of the precautionary saving motive

Article Abstract:

An analysis of the precautionary saving motive's role in explaining the saving and wealth accumulation of people close to retirement reveals that variance in income rates has a role. Precautionary saving however, fails to explain large accumulation of wealth for the very rich but he evidence suggests that precautionary savings is still a very important consideration for aging people in the class of 'very rich.'
