When economic reform is faster then statistical reform: measuring and explaining income inequality in rural China

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to analyze inequalities in income in rural China. Micro data from four provinces were utilized to carry out the analysis. Results indicated that two-thirds of the determined increase in inequality between 1985 and 1990 disappeared when market-based valuation techniques were used and allowances were made for regional cost-of-living differences. In addition, higher returns to farm land over time were inequality-increasing while lower returns to physical capital minimized inequality.

Improved estimates of the parameters of state space time series models

Article Abstract:

An instrumental variable interpretation of M. Aoki's state space time series estimators is used to develop an intuitively attractive enhanced estimator that is asymptotically efficient within its class. However, the increase in efficiency is dependent on many variables in a complicated fashion. The increase in efficiency was measured by generating data following several representative processes and by comparing the estimators' effects on in- and out-of-sample predictions.

Measuring union power in British manufacturing: a latent variable approach

Article Abstract:

The modelling of trade union power as a latent variable to more fully measure its effects on the UK manufacturing productivity focuses on wages. Results show that union bargaining effectively raises wages and that variables such as union density and collective bargaining coverage directly affects the effectivity level. Moreover, disparities in the strength of union power in the various UK industries are observed.
