World outlook

Article Abstract:

Concerns about the weakness of the world economy reamin, concentrating on western Europe and Japan. Growth in continental Europe has been patchy and a recovery will be subdued due to fiscal restrictions. G7 growth forecast is revised down with strong first half growth in the US, moderating in the third quarter. Oil prices are expected to remain high for a further six months. EMU is expected to start in 1999 and will include Germany, France and Benelux countries, but not Italy, Britain and Spain.

World outlook

Article Abstract:

There are continued concerns about the weakness of the world economy, with a fragile Japanese recovery and subdued European recovery. Strong US growth appears to have resumed in the last months of 1996 and Japanese GDP has estimated growth of 3.5% in 1996. Oil prices were strong in 1996 and there is expected to be strong growth in supply in 1997 with prices falling back to below $20 a barrel. The outlook for interest rates and EMU, which is expected to begin in 1999 is examined.
