Article Abstract:

An examination of the options that are open to the people who are stepping down from positions as university vice-chancellors and the challenges that face those taking up new vice-chancellor positions. New vice-chancellors profiled include Malcolm Grant at University College London, Tim Wilson at the University of Hertfordshire, and Les Ebdon at the University of Luton.

Older students beat top-ups

Article Abstract:

Around 31,000 additional people had applied to study at universities in the UK by the 15 January 2005, according to the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service, a rise of 8.9% over the previous year. The charge to beat the introduction of top-up fees was led by students aged over 21, which were up by 15%, and by women, which were up by 9.7%.
