Article Abstract:

Researchers have told the UK Treasury-initiated Lambert review of links between higher education and business that industry is making unrealistic demands on universities, with the Association for University Research and Industry Links noting that too often companies see universities as suppliers of services on demand rather than perceiving them as partners capable of delivering long-term economic growth. However, BAE Systems, a technology company, in its submission to the review has called for an end to academic peer review and for research funding to be jointly controlled by industry.

Employers, in submissions to the UK Treasury-initiated Lambert review into business-university links, have called for universities to be harnessed to national, regional and local economic needs, even if this results in the loss of academic freedom and institutional autonomy. The remit of the Lambert review includes university management and governance and their effectiveness in supporting good research, knowledge transfer and relevant skills for the economy.
