A Sheffield lad's steely resolve

Article Abstract:

Britain's shadow education and employment spokesman David Blunkett explains that taking O levels followed by three A levels and a national certificate in business studies after leaving a residential school for the blind without any qualifications, was a 'long, hard haul.' He recalls that the politics department of Sheffield University, where he won a place to study political theory and institutions in 1969, was excellent. Blunkett acknowledges that he was fairly dour as a student, and feels that he would probably have a bit more fun if he had his time at university over again.

Out of the melee into the fire?

Article Abstract:

David Goodhart, a former Labour editor of the Financial Times, is soon to launch Prospect, a monthly current affairs magazine. He believes that a politically pluralistic, analytical publication will be successful, and is not deterred by the fact that a number of journals of a similar nature have shut down over recent years. However, some observers believe that it will be hard for the magazine to achieve viable circulation levels, especially as it has only a very small promotional budget.
