Article Abstract:

The Association of University Teachers (AUT) plans to meet in May 1999 to ascertain the organisation's views on the new Institute for Learning and Teaching (ILT). Some AUT members were opposed to the ILT because of its complicated membership requirements, under which members would have to show they had achieved 24 specific teaching outcomes, but the ILT has offered to change this demand. The ILT is aimed at improving the profile of university teaching, but some critics claim it is too bureaucratic and its demands too time-consuming.

Sport takes a giant step back; governments may be using Olympic Games for social engineering

Article Abstract:

It is argued that the Olympic Games are as much about politics and television as about sport. They are now seen as symbolic of national pride and equal status with larger countries. A benefit is seen as the creation of jobs and investment for the country staging the games. Efforts are now being made to scale down the games by reducing the numbers of sports being included.
