A moderniser who couldn't modernise

Article Abstract:

Former University Vice Chancellor Kenneth Morgan has written a biography of the Former Labour Prime Minister James Callaghan, entitled Callaghan. A Life. Morgan points out that Callaghan is very well known and admired overseas whilst in the UK his work has not been recognized. Callaghan has experienced holding every major office in the government but he is still remembered by many as losing the 1979 election. Callaghan lacked the ability to force the Labour Party to change its strategy in the 1970s. Much of Callaghan's work was undone by the Conservative Party's success in 1979.

Prey for blessed Arnold

Article Abstract:

Former master of University College, Oxford, UK, and lawyer Lord Arnold Goodman reportedly stole 1 million pounds sterling from one of his clients and loaned 400,000 pounds sterling to Labour government ministers. Goodman was first accused in 'Private Eye' in 1971 of financial mismanagement and he did not sue the publication when the editors indicated they had further evidence. Goodman's reputation will be tarnished within the legal community, but he contributed greatly to culture and the arts in the UK.

The real David Marquand stands up

Article Abstract:

David Marquand is a UK politician and academic who has been appointed head of Mansfield College at Oxford University, England. He sees the UK as suffering from a lack of social cohesion with responsible citizenship having been eroded. He supports some notions from the UK Labor party such as moral collectivism and stakeholding capitalism. A large number of people in the UK are concerned about the fragmentation of society, Marquand argues, but he sees Labor's most difficult task as managing power.
