A real screen saver

Article Abstract:

Students at Clemson University, South Carolina, are not required to purchase their own laptop computers, unlike at most other US universities, but they are given access to network-linked laptops from which the student's own data files can be retrieved. The networked system allows students to use a laptop in any of the 33 labs on campus without having to physically move the equipment. All rooms in the halls of residence also have a network link facility, with around 33% of students also owning their own laptops.

Knowledge at a price

Article Abstract:

Business activity dominates Internet access, with just 8% of usage originating from academic sites. The continuing congestion of the Internet is expected to result in the demise of flat-rate billing and payment will be made on volume of data. If universities follow a similar route, there will be a strong incentive to charge access fees to external users of resources and their entrepreneurial services could complete with business-oriented information providers.
