A trip over red tape

Article Abstract:

Keith Gull, research dean at the school of biological sciences in Manchester, England, argues that research assessment exercises (RAE) and teaching quality assessments (TQA) are turning top researchers into administrators and holding back real research. Mike Kelly, professor of social sciences at Greenwich University, spent up to 80% of his working time in the first four months of 1996 concentrating on the RAE and TQA. John Macklin, director of the research school at Leeds University, points out that an extraordinary amount of work was put into the two assessments.

The 'Food Systems Under Stress' research project in Africa aims to develop practical solutions to the problems of food supply, with locals assured that research findings will be used to assist them. Financial assistance is also available, such as the funding of transportation for marketing or of seeds to help farmers cultivate new crops. Project founder Johan Pottier has set up permanent communication links between officials, intellectuals and villagers in order to help locals develop solutions to their own problems.
